Seasonal Guide

Bow River Fall Fishing

Trophy season. Aggressive browns, autumn colors, empty water. This is when serious anglers fish the Bow.

Why Fish the Bow River in Fall?

Summer gets the crowds. Fall gets the fish. When water temps drop into the 50s and leaves start turning, brown trout go into pre-spawn mode. They become territorial, aggressive, and willing to chase flies theyd ignore all summer.

Add empty water, spectacular scenery, and the chance at your personal best trout—fall is objectively the best season for trophy hunting on the Bow.

The Case for Fall Fishing

🎯Trophy Fish

Browns over 24" are realistic targets. Pre-spawn aggression puts big fish within reach.

🍂Empty Water

Summer crowds are gone. Fish water that hasnt been pressured in months.

📸Scenery

Golden cottonwoods, misty mornings, no bugs. The Bow is at its most beautiful.

Fall Fishing Month by Month

September: The Transition

September is when fall fishing really begins. Water temps drop, browns wake up, and the summer patterns fade.

  • Water Temp: 12-16°C (54-61°F) - dropping
  • Primary Target: Brown trout starting to get aggressive
  • Techniques: Transition month—streamers in the morning, nymphs midday, BWO dry flies on cloudy afternoons
  • Weather: Pleasant days (15-22°C), cool mornings, occasional rain
  • Crowds: School started, summer tourists gone. Prime availability.

October: Peak Trophy Season

This is it. The best month for trophy trout on the Bow. Browns are at maximum aggression, and the river is yours.

  • Water Temp: 8-12°C (46-54°F) - ideal brown trout range
  • Primary Target: Trophy brown trout, 24"+ realistic
  • Techniques: Streamer fishing dominates. Big flies, aggressive retrieves, tight to structure.
  • Weather: Variable. Some gorgeous days, some cold fronts. Layer up.
  • Crowds: Minimal. The anglers who fish October know what theyre doing.

Fall fishing is about quality over quantity. Youll probably catch fewer fish than a hot summer day, but the fish youre targeting are bigger and more memorable.

Fall Fishing Techniques

1. Streamer Fishing (The Go-To)

Big browns eat baitfish. Streamers imitate baitfish. The equation is simple. Strip-strip-pause retrieves near structure produce the most consistent action.

Top Fall Streamers:
  • Woolly Bugger (black, olive) — The classic that never fails
  • Sculpzilla — Sculpin imitation that browns cant resist
  • Sex Dungeon — Articulated aggression trigger

2. Big Nymphs

When streamers arent connecting, dead-drifted stonefly nymphs through deep runs produce. Pats Rubber Legs, Girdle Bug, big Pheasant Tails.

3. BWO Dry Flies

Blue Winged Olives hatch on overcast fall days. When you see fish rising, switch to a Parachute Adams or BWO pattern. Surface action is rarer but still happens.

Misty fall morning on the river

Misty mornings are common. Dress warm, stay patient. The fish are worth it.

Bow River Fall Fishing FAQ

Is fall the best time to fish the Bow?

For trophy browns, absolutely. For dry fly fishing, summers better. Fall offers bigger fish, fewer crowds, and beautiful scenery—but different fishing than summer.

What should I wear for fall fishing?

Layers. Mornings can be cold (sometimes near freezing), afternoons warm up. We provide waders. Bring a warm hat, gloves for early mornings, and a rain layer just in case.

Do fish still bite in October?

Yes. Browns are at peak aggression in October. Pre-spawn behavior makes them territorial and willing to chase streamers. Its arguably the best month for trophy fish.

Are there still hatches in fall?

BWOs (Blue Winged Olives) hatch in September and October, especially on overcast days. Nymphing and streamer fishing dominate, but you can still get surface action.

How cold does it get?

Morning temps can be 0-10°C (32-50°F) in October. By afternoon, 10-20°C (50-68°F) is typical. The fishing is worth the early chill.

When does the season end?

We fish through October. November conditions become unpredictable—freezing guides, ice, and fewer feeding fish. Book September or October for fall fishing.
