What You Actually Need to Bring

Required Documents

  • Alberta Fishing License — Required, no exceptions
    • Residents: ~$28 CAD (annual)
    • Non-residents: ~$80 CAD (annual) or $35 (5-day)
    • Buy online at mywildalberta.ca
    • Get this before your trip
  • Valid ID — For license verification
  • Passport — If crossing US/Canada border

Clothing (Layering Is Key)

Alberta weather changes fast. A sunny morning can become a thunderstorm by lunch. Dress in layers.

  • Base layer top — Moisture-wicking (wool or synthetic)
  • Fleece or light jacket — Mornings are cool (50-60°F)
  • Long pants — Quick-dry material, not jeans
  • Hat with brim — Sun protection essential
  • Buff or neck gaiter — Sun/wind protection
  • Light rain jacket — Alberta weather changes fast
  • Change of clothes — Leave in truck (in case you swim)

Season Adjustments

Spring (Apr-May)

Add warm fleece, gloves, beanie. Mornings can be cold.

Summer (Jul-Aug)

Shorts for under waders, light everything. Stay cool.

Fall (Sep-Oct)

Warmer layers, rain gear essential. Variable conditions.

Accessories

  • Polarized sunglasses — ESSENTIAL for sight fishing and eye protection
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ — Mountain UV is intense
  • Lip balm with SPF — Youll be glad you have it
  • Bug spray — Dawn/dusk mosquitoes
  • Camera or phone — Waterproof case recommended

Personal Items

  • Prescription medications — Dont forget these
  • Personal first aid — We carry one too, but pack any specifics
  • Snacks you like — We provide food, but bring favorites
  • Cash for tip — $75-150 customary for guides

Alberta-Specific Essentials

Fishing License (Detailed)

  • Where to buy: mywildalberta.ca (create account first)
  • What you need: ID, email, payment
  • Processing: Instant (print or save to phone)
  • Display: Keep receipt accessible, conservation officers check

Bear Country Awareness

The Bow River corridor is bear country. While encounters are rare on float trips (youre in the boat), be aware:

  • Bear spray — Optional but smart (we carry)
  • No food in pockets — Store snacks in cooler
  • Make noise on trails — Bears avoid people

Note: On guided float trips, youre in the boat. Bear encounters are essentially zero. This is more relevant for wade fishing.

Packing FAQ

What should I bring on a guided fly fishing trip?

Fishing license, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, layers, and a camera. We provide all fishing gear including rods, reels, flies, waders, and boots.

Do I need to bring my own rod and reel?

No. We provide rods, reels, flies, waders, boots, everything. You can bring yours if you prefer, but its not necessary.

What should I wear fly fishing?

Layers are key since conditions change fast. Quick-dry pants (not jeans), moisture-wicking base layer, fleece, and a hat with a brim. Polarized sunglasses are essential.

Do I need waders for a Bow River trip?

We provide fitted waders for all guided trips. If you prefer your own, thats fine too. For DIY trips, breathable chest waders are recommended.

Whats the most common packing mistake?

Overpacking. Bring layers and essentials only. Leave heavy gear at home because we provide everything you need to fish.

Do I need bear spray for fly fishing in Alberta?

Not for float trips since youre in the boat all day. For wade fishing in bear country, its optional but smart. We carry bear spray on all trips.

Ready to Fish the Bow?

Pack light, we handle the rest. All gear included with every guided trip.
